Among the Hidden

Jen and I have something in common, our ambition! When Jen had the thought of doing the rally, she stuck with it despite the dangers Luke was telling her about. When I want something bad enough, like when I want to move my grade up from a B to an A, I go after it, and try as hard as I can to get it. Sometimes it doesn't go as planned. If it didn't turn out the way we wanted it too, just like how Jen thought the shadow people would be free after the rally, but things ended up worse, and if I can't move my grade from a B to an A, I still try the next quarter to keep an A. Jen would keep on fighting for the rally, if she could too. (Peyton)

Monster connector

In Monster, Steve is wrongly accused of a crime. This happens all the time in the world today. Sometimes, somebody can get accused of murder, even though they were innocent. You hear on the news everyday about people who have been in jail for years and are just now being set free. (Brody)

Among the Hidden Review

Among the Hidden: During the first few chapters of the book, I was very intrigued. I was expecting a little more excitement, but I found that as I read on, the book took an unexpected turn! It turned out to be very interesting! There were a couple unexpected twists that really caught my eye, and of course some nervous nail- biter moments. I teared up in the end when Luke made a tough decision to leave his family. Overall, I think this book was pretty good!
Peyton

Monster: loneliness

In Monster, Steve is sad and missing his parents. I experienced this when I was at a camp in Tennessee for 1 month. Sure, I was having fun and making new friends, but after 3 weeks, I really started to miss my parents. That and home cooking. i love home cooking. (Brody)

Review of Lottery Rose

Irene Hunt crafts a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of seven-year-old Georgie, a struggling little boy who is abused at home by his mother and her boyfriend, Steve, in The Lottery Rose. This book realistically shares the fictional tale of Georgie Burgess's childhood struggle and shows the sensitivity and grief resulting from child abuse and neglect. Although it starts out gloomily, Irene Hunt uses the deep, intricate sadness to her advantage, creating a vibrant page-turner where you crave to figure out what Georgie embarks on next. Irene Hunt really makes the characters almost come to life in a way that you feel concerned for their well-being all throughout the book. All in all, The Lottery Rose was a fantastic book and I'd recommend it to anyone who wouldn't mind shedding a few tears every once in a while. (Thanya)

Monster Connection

The Book The Outsiders, and the book Monster, have simalarites like they both have teenagers as the main charachters. They also have two hearings. The fact that the two books have those similarites make you want to know what other books are like them. the 2 hearings are about kilings which is a connection. this is a text to text conection. (zach getty).

Monster commentary

My uncle is a lawyer and once he had to do a case that involved a person like Steve. The case involved 3 people and one guy was shot like the store owner Mr. Nesbit. In the end my uncle lost the case, but got his clinet 50% off in jail. so instead of 2 years and 6 months it was 1 year and 3 months. (Zach)

Monster Connection

First off steve, the main charecter, feels like he diddnt do something that people are accusing him of. I've felt like that befor like if im hiding something from my mom and only telling her what I bealive is to be true. I feel really worried because what if she bealives my brother. then it looks like its all my fault. I get really nervouse when this happens. This is what I imagine steve feels like. katherine

Monster Review

I thought that monster had an intresting premise, although it was pretty hard to follow. Though the idea to write a book like a movie script was great. It made each page go really fast which I liked a lot. It made the book move fast which was great. It is an enjoyable read but not the best. Katherine

Among the Hidden

Among the Hidden was a wonderful book. I really enjoyed the lies, action, and contortion. But there were parts if it were a movie i would avert my eyes. Over all I give a A. Its a a book where the first 50 pages aren't the most appealing.

Austin's review & connection

Review: Monster is a relatively good book but to me, cannot be called addicting. It seems interesting at first but as the story progresses, it get boring and boring and boring. You might want to find out what happens to Steve Harmon and that’s understandable. The story jumps around too much and there seems to be no clean plot to it. To me, a good book is a interesting read, but a great book is one that is intriguing and makes me wonder more about the book. My opinion is that the book is a good read, but definitely not in my top 25 book. I didn’t like but didn’t hate it.

A connection between me and Steve from the book Monster is that we both have been blamed for something we didn’t do. Steve was blamed for robbing a store while I got blamed for breaking the keyboard on the computer. My little brother was hitting the keys with one of his toys and accidentally broke the keyboard. I got blamed for breaking it because my parents always push the blame on me and not my little brother

Lottery Rose Review

I thought the book, The Lottery Rose, was great. In the beginning, i looked at the title and said, "This looks stupid it's about a rose...". When i read the first couple of pages about Georgie mouthing off to his teachers i changed my thoughts and it made me want to read more. Georgie encounters many things from being beaten, to winning a rosebush, to being sent to an all boys home. In the story i liked how they consistantly introduced new characters. I really liked this book and i think if you read it you will too. (Morgan)

Review of ? Monster

My idea of the book was that it was pretty good except for the fact that it was kind of hard to follow. Also I think that the author could have made the shifts and flash-backs easier to figure out. The author also could have made it easier for the readers to remember who all of the characters were. I think that the book would have been better if it had been written like a book instead of a movie script. The book would also have been better if the transitions between "scenes" were better. Other than that, the book was pretty good. (Luke)

Connector to Among the Hidden

In my family, there are three children, me and my two sisters. I am the second child, but if my little sister were against the law, things would be a little different around my house. It might be quieter without a seven year old that's full of energy bounding around, but it would be weird. Things wouldn't be right somehow. I am glad that our world doesn't follow the "no third children" rule that Luke's family does in Running Out of Time. I think things would be quite different in Luke's family if he weren't around. I think Matthew and Mark would have a harder time without him hiding. The whole family would definetly be very different. It's the same thing with my family. Who knows where we'd be if it my little sister weren't ever born. Or if she were hiding like Luke. It would be very hard for her, I'm sure. She probably wouldn't be able to be quiet and still. I am glad that the world we live in today is not like Luke's world. (Lexie)

Among the Hidden Review

I thought Among the Hidden was a pretty good book. I chose that one over the other books because it was written by Margaret Peterson Haddix who also wrote Running Out of Time. I thoroughly enjoyed that book so I had quite high expectations for Among the Hidden. It wasn't nearly as good as I'd been hoping for, but I liked the story well enough to want to keep turning the pages. Overall, I would say that I liked reading Among the Hidden, but I don't see myself searching for the sequels in the library. (Lexie Wolff)

Among the Hidden Review

This past week I read the book Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and from the very start I had a fondness for the book. I despised the fact that Luke was a third child, I just think that it is repulsive. The characters in the book were very well developed and described. Books can be a quick read but still have great ideas and plots. Overall, I thought this was a very good book, a 4.5 out of 5, and I would recomend Among the Hidden to kids, espically older elemtary and middle school kids. (Grace)

Child abuse

In many ways, The Lottery Rose relates to our world, but it has one particular relation: child abuse. In The Lottery Rose, the main character, Georgie, his mother abuses him. This happens in many cases in our world. She neglects him, and threatens him to the point where he misbehaves constantly. Also, her boyfriend abuses Georgie, which also happens in the world. He will beat him to the point where he will get a black eye, or a bloody nose, just like many people do to their children. (Ashley)

Lottery Rose

The Lottery Rose is a wonderful book! I enjoyed it because it starts out with a very interesting hook. It is so sorrowful in the beginning, it makes you want to continue. Then, it introduces you to new characters like Mr.Colleir and Robin. these characters are very unique. You feel like you want to care for them and see what happens to them later on. I thought it would be a bit more sad based on what my friends told me, but i suppose that's a good thing. I really loved it! Read it now! (Elizabeth)

Among the Hidden

text to world
Just like in Among the Hidden, people chop down woods all the time to make room for houses or whatever else. I think it is terrible that this is happening and I wish it would stop. It is sad to think about the natural state of our world, but specifically America, being disturbed. In the book, if the government hadn't cut down those woods, Luke might still be allowed to go outside, but he has to stay completely hidden when the new families move in. I think it is a good connection to reality. (Lexie)

Journey of the Sparrows

In Journey of the Sparrows, Thomas loves to go swimming in the oceans, espically during the storm. He says that he is fearless out there. In the Twilight series, Bella is fearless around Edward, who is a vampire. Both Thomas and Bella are fearless at times when they should be fearing. They feel the excitement, not the fear. (Grace)

Among the Hidden

Among the Hidden:
Luke's dad and I have something in common. If one of my family members were in danger, I would be overly protective. In the book, Luke's dad makes sure that Luke is being extra careful so he doesn't get caught by the population police. Sometimes when I'm at home I make sure my sister and brother are doing what they are supposed to do like homework. It may seem unfair to them sometimes, like how Luke feels about his fathers restrictions. But sometimes being overly protective is a good thing.
Peyton C.

Review: Among the Hidden

The book, Among the Hidden, is a great book! The only flaw was the ending. I realize that it's one of the books in a series, but I would really like to know what happens next! It left me with several questions. Is he happy with his new family? Does he like his new school? Will he make new friends? Besides the ending, I love this book! You can't put it down! You're always wondering what's going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery. (Claire)

Georgie & Johnny Cade

Text to Text:In The Lottery Rose, Georgie has a striking resemblance to Johnny Cade, of The Outsiders. Both of them are abused at home constantly, and grow to despise their parents. In addition to that, both are taken away from their homes. In The Outsiders, Johnny develops a liking for Gone with the Wind and poetry, something deeper and more sensitive than most boys in his gang. In The Lottery Rose, Georgie likes flowers, especially his rosebush, which is also unlike other boys. (Thanya)

Lottery Rose Connection

When Georgie wins the rosebush at the local store, he feels very proud and loves the rosebush very much. Whenever I win a trophy or another reward, it makes me feel so proud and I take great care of it. Throughout a big part of the book, Georgie is trying to find the perfect place for his rosebush. I am a lot like him because I always have to have my trophy in a certain place that I think looks the best. He also saw a picture in his book of a garden. Georgie saw that a garden across the street from his new school looks a lot like the one in the book and he knows that that is where he should plant his rosebush. I usually plan out where a new trophy or medal should go and so then if I get one it will look perfect
-Laura D.

Review: The Lottery Rose

I did not enjoy the book The Lottery Rose very much. I wasn't ever hooked from the beginning and I didn't think that the story in all had an exciting plot. I am more into funny or action-packed books and I don't believe that this book could be counted as one of them. Although many other people ,ay have loved this book. I would really only give it a C. Among the Hidden

Text to self-Among the Hidden
Have you ever been really anxious about something until it finally happened? In this book, Jen is really excited to make a difference by having a rally. She is determined to to stop the population law. I was really excited to my aunt's house, that that's all I could talk about and think about. Although these are two completely different stories, they have a very similar connection! (Claire)

Lottery Rose Review

I thought the Lottery Rose was a really good book. The first plot was just so sad that it made you want to keep reading. Plus, it kept your attention throught the middle by using some really creative characters. I liked how they included the parts from school. That just makes the characters more relatable. But surprisingly, I didn't find it as sad as everyone had said it would be. I respect what happened (I didn't laugh or anything) I just didn't find myself crying. Either way, Irene Hunt did a great job! A+! (Elizabeth)

Book Review for Monster

(Ashley) I think that Monster is an EXCELLENT book. It is very well written, and it is one of my new favorites! At times, it can be confusing, but other than that, it's really good.
It really captures you into Steve's position, and I felt like I was going on the same journey with him. It made me feel lilke I was part of him. It had a great plot-line, and it captures your attention.

Review for Among the Hidden

Among the Hidden is a very well written book. Towards the end of the story I couldn't stop reading. I think the author could have told us more about the other characters, besides Luke and Jen. The author should have definately made the beginning of the book much more interesting. The thought that Luke's a shadow child keeps you reading because you want to find out what will happen to him and his family. Overall I loved the plot and the danger in Among the Hidden. I can't wait to begin reading the next book in the series. (SZ)

Critique of Monster

I didn't think the book was very captivating. I didn't find a very clear climax, or feel any suspense. I did like how the book was writtenn such a unique way. The movie format was an outstanding touch to the book. I also liked the flashbacks, I felt like i knew how Steve was really feeling.Overall, the book was intriguing. (Maria)

New Kid

Steve Harmon is a new kid in the jail. I know that everyone has been a new kid or person at one time or another. I personally have never been a new person, but I know that many people have whether it was in school, sports, or any sort of extra curricular. Luke

New Kid

Steve Harmon is a new kid in the jail. I know that everyone has been a new kid or person at one time or another. I personally have never been a new person, but I know that many people have whether it was in school, sports, or any sort of extra curricular. Luke

LR

In The Lottery Rose, a young boy named Georgie is abused by his parents and is sent off to a school for boys and his life becomes very different. He has to make new friends and adjust to a new life. Many other kids also move and go to new schools and they would probably understand what Georgie feels like. Usually they make friends just like Georgie met Timothy. (LD)

Reveiw of Monster (RK)

Walter Dean Myers creates a suspenceful courtroom story in Monster. The book is set up in a movie script format. The story was very intriguing and I wanted to read more. Every once in a while I would get caught up in all the different characters in the courtroom and have to go back and see who they were, but that was about the only flaw. The book made me feel like I was really in the movie, or the director of it. One great thing was that it gave me another point of veiw of how prisoners feel when they are up for trail, especially a juvenile. This was a intersting book and would suggest it to any one for a different genre of reading. (Rachel)

Book Review for Journey of the Sparrows

Fran Leeper Buss attempts to create a compelling account of a very contemporary issue-illegal immigration. She creates a "composit" character in Maria, drawing upon her experience working with illegal immigrants. While Journey of the Sparrows reads as a nonfiction piece, it's actually a fiction piece. Sometimes an author can successfully pull this off, making the account SO believable. Unfortunately, Buss doesn't. While I was interested in reading about the fate of Maria and her family, inwardly I felt that Buss was trying too hard and, for me, this writing endeavor falls flat. Ultimately, I give this book a C grade.

Being an outsider:text to world

Here is my second connector paragraph:
Text to world: Everyone feels like an outsider. In the book Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, Steve, the main character, is rejected by society because people see him as a delinquent. Once in your life, you have probably been black listed by society. Maybe, you were new at your school, and all the other kids had known each other forever. Also, if you are a realy smart person, but everyone doesn't take the time to get to know you beacuse you are too smart. They think you're a teacher's pet, so they reject you from their social group. We all know what it's like to be an outsider , whether we realize it or not. (Maria)

Among the Hidden

Text-to-Self
Luke says that he thinks he has handled being a shadow child in his family better than the rest of them would. For example he thinks his dad would become very grumpy if he had to hide in his room all the time. Luke is quiet and sulks a little bit, but it's better than Mark who would complain all the time and make everyone else in the house miserable. I would probably begin trying to make the best out of it like Luke's mother, but then I would become grumpy like his dad after awhile. If I was locked up in my room, I would need a treadmill to get all of my energy out. I would have to have something to get all of my energy out or else I would go crazy. (SZ)

The Lottery Rose

The book, _The Lottery Rose_, is about a little boy who gets beaten and
is a smart allick and goofs off in school. I can connect to this
because I always goof off in school. When teachers ask me something i
don't feel like answering, i answer kind of smart alicky. When i was
little i always used to yell at teachers just like Georgie does. (Morgan)

Monster & Camp

I am reading the book monster and there are some connections I have about to the outside world. Well first off the conditions at the jail where Steve is being held are pretty bad, there are bugs dirt, and grime. Also it is very uncomfertiable. Well when I was at camp there was a squrral's nest on the bed next to me and bugs climbing all over the walls. All I wanted to do was go home. Like in monster steve wanted to go home to. Also the people in the cabin next to us accused us of doing something that we didn't do. Like in monster steve is accused of something that he beleives he diddn't do. (Katherine M)

Among the Hidden

Text-to-World
While I was reading Among the Hidden, I noticed a very important connection between the book and the outside world. I saw a house near here, and the government was taking their land away to build a road. In Among the Hidden their land is taken away from them to cut down the forest to build houses. This is a very bad thing for Luke and his family because he is an illegal third child. He is in danger of being caught by the population police and being taken away from his family. Both of the people who live in the houses are angry that the government is taking away their land. While one family gets to keep their house, the other one is forced to move away. Niether of them are happy, but they can't do anything about it because the government will not allow them. (Suzanne)

Monster & Jail

Text to self: I've never actually been to jail, but I have been to a courtroom and have felt the tension that is in the room. One time in elementary school I went to a courtroom to see and learn about trials and people in the courtroom. I got to view a murder trial with my class. Also I can somewhat understand how Steve feels because my class and I got to go inside a jail cell. I thought that the cell was kind of spooky. (Luke)

Monster: Steve as an outsider

Steve Harmon is like an outsider because he feels he doesn't belong in jail. He feels he is much more different than all the other prisoners in the cells. Steve feels that he is being falsely accused for a crime he did not commit. He is like an outsider because he doesn't seem to fit in with all the other cell mates. When all the other cell mates are looking for violence, Steve is tryting to shy away from it. His lawyer wants to put him on the stand to show everyone that he is different than the other men who commited the murder. H eis much different from all his school now too. He is a convict and probably won't be looked at the same wat anymore. Even his own father won't look at him the same. One light in the tunnel is his mom who has faith in him no matter what the jury says. (Rachel)

The crime in Monster remindes me of another crime that was commited awhile ago. Both crimes were commited at a little drugstore. In both crimes someone was murdered. The people who were muredered were also Mexican. One difference between the cases is that the murdered person was a woman in real life and this one is a man. I now see that in the drugstore there are bars on the windows for extra protection so the same situation doesn't happen again. The murderer was found in real life, and I hope that Steve is found not guilty if he really wasn't a person that helped with the crime. (Rachel)

Lottery Rose to Reflections Contest & Outsider theme

Text-to-world
The more I read The Lottery Rose, the more I find that the theme is similar to this years reflection's theme, "Beauty is...". This reflections theme means that you can find beauty anywhere, even if the rest of the world stinks. Georgie knows this. He has lived in a crowded city with his alchoholic mother. Her boyfriend, Steve, comes over every now and then and abuses him. But Georgie can find beauty even in a situation like this. When he wins a rosebush in a grocery store lottery, he thinks it's the best thing ever. Flowers mean everything to him. They are his friends when he doesn't get along at school. They make a home for him when Steve abuses him. So that's why The Lottery Rose relates to this year's reflection's theme.

Text-to-Text
The main character of The Lottery Rose, Georgie, is most definitly an outsider. He is not only an outsider in school, where his teacher actually think he is retarded, but at home. His mother is an alchoholic and her boyfriend abuses him whenever he comes over. He is sometimes forced to find food on the streets in the city they live in. He is also different because he loves flowers. You would not expect an abused and rough child to love flowers, but this is where he finds comfort. The children at school make fun of him for it. And that's how I see the theme of "outsider" in The Lottery Rose. (Elizabeth)

Monster

Text to World: I have not experienced anything like this but I have heard many stories out in the world. Jail is harsh because you have no rights. In this story there was a holdup in a thrift store and the owner (Alguinaldo Nesbitt) was murdered. Now they are trying to find the murderer or murderers. It seems that all suspects are pleading for innocence. Although most seem not guilty there are a few that stand out-- James King and Steve Harmon are on trial for MURDER. (Derek)

Lottery Rose Connection

In the Lottery Rose, Georgie Burgess is viewed as an "outsider". This is because, unlike other children, he is constantly abused at home, forcing him onto the streets, only to go back to his mother for food and better shelter. He lives in fear of his mother's boyfriend, Steve, who beats him. Due to this hard childhood, Georgie has grown up to be harsh and cruel towards others, earning him dislike and mockery at his school. Because of his difficulties learning and the lack of kindness in his life, he is very different from others and is considered to be an outsider. (Thanya)

Among the Hidden Connector

In Bridge to Terabithia one of the main characters, Leslie is a fun, out going and adventurous young girl. That is just like Jen from Among the Hidden. They are very simaliar in many ways like they both die for a cause they believe in. Jen died for the right for 3rd children, she was killed by the Population Police. Leslie died while going to Terabithia, the rope she used to cross the river between the magical place where all fantasy exist which broke. (WB)

Two Lottery Rose Connections

Like in Dragon Rider both young boys are taken away from their harsh environments they lived in. Ben from Dragon Rider accompanies Firedrake and Sorrel on their adventure to find the Rim of Heaven. He left what he called home, old abandoned warehouse, before it was demolished. Georgie left his Mom and her boyfriend and had an adventure of his own in a way. Georgie went to a house for boys and had to adjust to his new surroundings.

In Lottery Rose Georgie wins a rose bush. My sister once won a school raffle and got 4 Braves tickets, a Braves hat and a Baseball. These were both just 2 lucky coincidence that they won. Georgie and my sister have had hard times but sometimes with a little lucky your life can be changed around. (WB)

Monster: Connection 1 (RB)

I can really see how miserable Steve Harmon is, being on trial for a murder that he did not commit. I'm not saying I've committed murder! But I have been the victim of misinterpretation. I was playing with my friend at his house when he went accross the street to shoot out the windows of the elementary schools with his paintball gun. I was totally against it, but he was adament. I bailed, and he never did it. However, when his mom drove me to my house, the guy said that I was the one that suggested it and that he was the one trying to get me not to do it. I thought I was DEAD! It took me almost an hour to talk my mom out of believing that it was me. It was awful, knowing that she didn't believe me. She said that if I was lying, and that I did do it, she would ground me for 2 lives. (Ryan)

Monster: Connector 1 (AB)

Monster relates to the theme of being an outsider because, we treat criminals as outsiders. In the book, the main character, Steve, is treated differently and is viewed as an outsider and that he can't change to become a regular member of society. One example in the book is when Steve is in trial, and there is a middle school that is there on a field trip. He looks at them, and the children look away, as if he is not a human being, but a monster. Monster has many relations to our society and how we view our people in it. (Ashley)

Among the Hidden: Connector 1

I used to live in a fairly large house with an amazingly big back yard that we shared with the next door neighbors. The yard was old and was covered in weeds. My family, friends and I would go back there and play all kinds of games such as, kick ball, baseball and frisbee. Unfortunately the neighbors moved and another couple moved in next to us. They tore down the house and built a mansion. Sadly, the house and the fancy, new pool took up all of the backyard.
Luke's family and I have shared something in commmon. Luke enjoyed having the woods to explore and I enjoyed having a big backyard. The woods got torn down and my backyard was replaced by a house. We were both sad and missed our space to play and hang out. (Claire)

Connector paragraph 1: Monster

Monster
Walter Dean Myers
(Maria G.)

Text to text: I noticed a connection between Monster and The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. In both stories the main charcters, teenage boys, don't feel that they fit in. People see the boys as tough hoodlems who are up to no good, but inside they are innocent and good. Both boys have to go to court following the incident that they are framed for. In Monster, Steve is seen as tough 16 year old who helped in a drugstore holdup, but really he is a young boy who is scared to spend his whole life in jail. Ponyboy decieves everyone by hanging around with his older brothers and their freinds that form a gang, but later in the story Cherry Vance uncovers the soft side of Ponyboy.

The Lottery Rose

A connection between me and Georgie is that we both have something that makes us feel good. Georgie has his rosebush and I have my golf ball collection. Whenever Georgie sees his rosebush, it makes him feel good. When I look at my golf ball collection, it makes me feel proud that I collected all of those golf balls. Georgie won his rose bush in a lottery at a grocery store while I got my golf balls at the award ceremony on the course. I guess winning something or getting it as a prize would make you feel a sense of satisfaction.

Among the Hidden

In Among the Hidden, when Luke is young he is always asking how old he has to be for people to be able to see him. There is a connection between Luke and my sister, Lydia. Lydia is always asking how old she has to be to be able to do the things that my brother and I do, like being able to have a cell phone. I think that many of the youngest kids are always trying to be able to do what their brother and sisters are doing, because they look up to their brothers and sisters. This is very common everywhere around the globe. (Grace)

Connector paragraph for Journey of the Sparrows

The theme of "outsiders" or "stranger in a strange land" is easily seen in Fran Leeper Buss' novel, Journey of the Sparrows. The main characters all become outsiders when they leave their small village. Maria, Julia and Oscar, all children, escape horrible conditions in their homeland of El Salvador. They see members of their family and community killed by rebel soldiers. As a result, they flee home in search of refuge. Once they leave their village, they are outsiders. Living in fear and constantly looking over their shoulders for "guardias" they make their way to Mexico. In Mexico, they are considered outsiders. The threat of deportation looms over their impoverished lives. Scapping a living for several months, Maria's mother desires more for her four children. She hopes that somehow the U.S. will accept her children, that they will be able to make a living, even illegally, and eventually send money for the rest of the family to follow. She hires coyotes to sneak her children from Mexico into the U.S. Once across the border, the children continue to live in fear. They are surrounded by a strange language, strange customs, strange people and strange circumstances. They feel lonely and alienated. Truly they are outsiders.

Discussion Director Questions for Journey of the Sparrows

1. Why are Maria and her siblings escaping?
2. How realistic is this scenerio of three young people leaving their country without their parents to an unknown future?
3. What kind of conditions would it take for (you) as a parent to let your children leave without you?
4. What's the significance of the title?
5. How does Maria's skill as an artist give her an edge over other illegal immigrants?
